Gajaba UN peace keeping battalion is ready to embark

image   9th Battalion of UN peace keeping contingent for Haiti, is ready to embark for UN peace keeping operations on 16th December 2008. The trained battalion offered the guard of honour to Major General Jagath Jayasuriya USP psc, Security Force Commander of Wanni on 3rd December 2008 at Sri Lanka light infantry parade square, Panagoda.  The contingent commander Colonel J.M.U.DammikaJayasingha commanded the parade and offered the salute to the chief guest Major General Jagath Jayasuriya USP psc.The contingent consisted of 51 officers and 697 soldiers. The deputy command of the contingent was Lieutenant Colonel Senerath Neunhella.  The contingent will operate in Haiti for six months of a duration and return to the country. This is the second contingent of the Gajaba Regiment that will serve in UN peace keeping operations for Haiti. The first contingent was commanded by Brigadier Nissanka Ranawana and its deputy was Colnel Mahinda Weerasuriya.  The contingent will carry out the peace keeping operations in Minusta area in Haiti incordination with international armies like, Brazil, Arjentina, Uruguay. This is an important opportunity for Sri Lankan army to get an international exposure in international peace keeping operations. UN peace keeping commands considered Sri Lankan forces as one of the best peace enforcers and professional armed force in the world.
